Luigi Mangione Documentary in the Works!

The headlining story that has captivated the nation these past two weeks is now set to unfold on screen! Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions are collaborating to produce a documentary focused on the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot on December 4 in midtown Manhattan.

Luigi Mangione, the suspect arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, provides the intriguing twist to the narrative. The 26-year-old valedictorian and Ivy League graduate was found with a ghost gun and a handwritten note referencing filmmaker Michael Moore’s documentary “Sicko,” which critiques the U.S. healthcare system. This upcoming documentary by Gibney and Anonymous will investigate the societal implications of the event, examining how individuals become killers and what the incident reveals about American values regarding life and death.

Thompson’s death has polarized public opinion. UnitedHealthcare is noted for rejecting claims at nearly double the industry average. While a few wealthy individuals have condemned the killing, most people around the world have expressed support for Mangione.

“Your coverage of this [event] has been completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience.”

The film will focus on widespread frustrations with the healthcare industry, particularly concerning insurance companies’ claim denials and escalating costs. Mangione was apparently suffering from severe back pain and had undergone surgery recently — an X-ray of his spine can be seen on his Twitter/X account.

Developments in Mangione’s case are anticipated soon, as he has yet to be indicted. He is represented by prominent New York attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo.

Gibney, known for his Oscar-winning documentary “Taxi to the Dark Side,” is also working on projects about Elon Musk and Salman Rushdie’s memoir “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.” This documentary marks the third partnership between Anonymous Content and Jigsaw Productions, following acclaimed films like “Spotlight” and “The Revenant.”
