South Central Los Angeles has long had a reputation for crime, violence, and poverty. It is known for producing street gangs like the Bloods and Crips, and was the scene of major race riots in the 1960s and 1990s. The area has been plagued by high crime rates, gang activity, and illegal drugs for decades.

The negative reputation stems in part from the area’s demographics – it has a large African-American and Latino population.

In recent years, the crime rate in South Central has improved considerably. The area is not as dangerous as it once was.

South Central has undergone gentrification, with rising rents and an influx of wealthier residents.
