which goes against being good stewards of what God has given us.
Choices involving drug use have far-reaching effects that extend beyond the individual. Substance abuse impacts not only the person partaking in drugs but also their families, church communities, and those they could potentially serve more effectively if unencumbered by addiction.
When someone abuses drugs, the ripple effects are felt by their loved ones. Families bear the emotional and practical burdens of their family member’s addiction. Furthermore, church communities suffer from the diminished participation and service of one of their members. Perhaps most critically, those who could have been helped or inspired through selfless actions are deprived of the positive impact that the individual is capable of when unencumbered by substance abuse.
The apostle Paul reminds believers that they are all part of one body in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:26). An individual’s choices regarding drugs affect not just themselves, but the entire body of believers. There is a responsibility to that body to live in a way that avoids causing harm and maximizes the potential for good works and service to others.
