Case Number: 2022-00431

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 27-year-old Hispanic/Latin American male that occurred in a hospital.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Fernando Arroyos, resident of West Vernon Avenue.

Manner of Death: Homicide

Cause of Death: Gunshot Wound of the Left Arm and Torso

RIP FERNANDO ARROYOS (February 9, 1994 – January 10, 2022)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Monday at 9:38 p.m.

Incident Location:
8711 Beach Street, Los Angeles, CA 90002

The decedent was an off-duty L.A. Police Department officer who was gunned down while house-hunting with his girlfriend.

Arroyos was targeted by members of a Latino street gang who were driving around looking for someone to rob. They decided to target the decedent, who was wearing gold chains around his neck.

Two gang members allegedly pointed guns at Arroyos and removed property from him and his girlfriend, including a wallet and two silver chains from Arroyos’s neck.

At some point, Arroyos and the two suspects exchanged gunfire. Arroyos would be taken by responding sheriff’s deputies to Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Arroyos was a three-year veteran of the pig squad.

The shooter was a street-gang associate named Haylee Marie Grisham, 19, who would later plead guilty for her part in the robbery and fatal shooting.

Three other defendants — all suspected gang members — would also face trial in federal court.

On the night of Arroyos’ death, Grisham and her co-defendants were driving around looking for someone to rob when they decided to target the victim, who was wearing gold chains around his neck, according to her plea agreement.
