Enterococci as a pathogen in endocarditis are becoming more prevalent as a consequence of the growing number of elderly patients with degenerative heart valve disease, prosthetic heart valves, and a higher incidence of enterococcal bloodstream infections originating from the gastrointestinal or urogenital tracts.
