(L.A.) Paul Hoa, 45, Died at a Rehab Center

Los Angeles County is reporting the death of a 45-year-old “Chinese” male that occurred in a rehabilitation center.

The coroner’s office has identified the man as Paul Hoa.

Manner of Death: Accident

Cause of Death A: Complications of Quadriplegia

Cause of Death B: Blunt Neck Trauma

Other Significant Condition: Bladder Tumor, Not Otherwise Specified

RIP PAUL HOA (May 15, 1977 – July 10, 2022)

Formal pronouncement of death was made on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

There was a relevant incident at a warehouse at San Quentin Prison in July 2011. The court case is Paul HOA v. Mathew CATE, et al. 2014.

Plaintiff was a prisoner in the custody of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (“CDCR”) at San Quentin State Prison (the “Prison”). As a condition of incarceration, Plaintiff was required to work. Around June 2011, Plaintiff was assigned to assist commercial vehicles entering the area near the waterfront warehouse (“Work Area”) back up to an unloading ramp or gravel area, and unload and load. The ramp was installed in late June or early July of 2011. On July 27, 2011, Plaintiff was severely injured when a truck trailer reversed without receiving any signal to do so, and crushed Plaintiff against the ramp. Plaintiff lost all use of his limbs and torso, and requires a ventilation machine to assist him breathe.

The decedent passed away at 9440 Texhoma Avenue, Northridge, CA 91325, which is the address of the NeuroRestorative rehabilitation center.
