nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is commonly known as laughing gas. It is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a slightly sweet odor and taste at room temperature.

It is used as an anesthetic and analgesic in dentistry and surgery for its pain-reducing and sedative effects.

It induces a euphoric state when inhaled, leading to its recreational use as a dissociative anesthetic.

It is used as an oxidizer in rocket propellants and in motor racing to increase engine power output.

It is employed as a propellant for whipped cream and as a food additive.

Nitrous oxide can be used as a method of suicide, though it is relatively uncommon. It is an inhalant that can cause asphyxiation and death when inhaled in high concentrations, depriving the body of oxygen.

Cases of intentional suicide by nitrous oxide inhalation have been reported, particularly among healthcare professionals with access to the gas.
